To be it's always just been an entertaining crime movie. It always bothered me that the character never seem to be affected by drugs, like they are always in perfect control of themselves.

In response to Simon post- I think the problem with putting drugs on film is that the camera literalizes them and makes them the centre of the action. That's not a problem when adapting a book like Requiem for a Dream because Selby is using drug use literally as a metaphor for the futility and destructivness of chashing the American dream and that's how the film comes off.

However, Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting (which the film is like the Coles Notes version of) is no so much a book about drug use as it is a book about people who use drugs. There's a difference. Welsh, in that sense, is kind of like Elmore Leonard in that his books are entertaining and work to capture the essence of a certain type of people. However, when you translate that to film the drugs take centre stage and people require a message, which, because of the way it is written, the Trainspotting book doesn't have. Welsh isn't trying to make a point though, he's more of a sociologist if anything.

I think also where this film made its biggest negative impact is that it made hip the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to film style which would be taken up again and again, and still is, in much much lesser films. The Taxi Driverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04352371911592068643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1571769854236946971.post-29268230731603719382010-05-06T06:51:28.886-07:002010-05-06T06:51:28.886-07:00The baby bit gave me night terrors.
