If I want to know if a movie is good or not I'll go see it, when I read a great critic it's because I want to know how that specific person experienced that specific movieThe Taxi Driverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04352371911592068643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1571769854236946971.post-80348487066892183862010-05-24T14:15:11.739-07:002010-05-24T14:15:11.739-07:00What gets me about a lot of these articles is that...What gets me about a lot of these articles is that they are inflammatory for the sake of it and seem to point out only the negatives. It's almost as if they are ticking the boxes on some virtual checklist, as opposed to giving a film a chance on it's own merit and trying to appreciate it as it is.Ronanhttp://filmplicity.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1571769854236946971.post-9126267191791637692010-05-23T15:25:31.135-07:002010-05-23T15:25:31.135-07:00Colin, that was fast, you found this the same day ...Colin, that was fast, you found this the same day it was published. Do you Google yourself? I suppose my wording was maybe harsh and did not convey what I meant to say which is, not that your work is worthwhile or not, maybe it is, maybe it isn't, I'd have to look into it, but that, if Hobsen wanted to quote critics to justify printing a review to a film he had not seen he should at least be quoting the likes of Roger Ebert, Michael Phillips, A.O. Scott, J. Hoberman, Vincent Canby, etc, not the guy from efilmcritic.com, whose work, I will admit, I more often than not do not admire. At least then I'd be willing to buy into his concern for whether or not the thing is any good, which, as it turned out, I would argue, it was rather good. Not great, but good nonetheless and at least two of those great critics that I named agreed. The Taxi Driverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04352371911592068643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1571769854236946971.post-39298842979550936902010-05-22T21:23:21.071-07:002010-05-22T21:23:21.071-07:00"So-called professionals"? " I'..."So-called professionals"? " I'm not sure any of those critics qualify as respectable sources'? Harsh words, Mike. Have you spent any time reading my work, other than the excerpt quoted above? I think you would find it worthwhile, the effort of a serious and committed critic. Why malign people doing what you aspire to do? Create your own criticism. circulate it, and see if there are professional outlets willing to pay you for your work.

Colin CovertChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03757028702283250576noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1571769854236946971.post-88462183931503878542010-05-22T18:35:06.773-07:002010-05-22T18:35:06.773-07:00This pisses me off considerably. There are a lot of bloggers who do both of those things, good bloggers, but whats the point. I was really put off last weekend when a lot of those people said they'd be seeing Robin Hood but wouldn't even give Just Wright or Letters to Juliet a chance because they look cliche or whatever. Well yes, Just Wright was cliche, but it was also very good. You miss a lot of good movies with such an attitude. The Taxi Driverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04352371911592068643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1571769854236946971.post-30326899138801592682010-05-22T10:48:50.362-07:002010-05-22T10:48:50.362-07:00It's hardly a review if he hadn't seen it....It's hardly a review if he hadn't seen it. It irritates me no end when a critic says "I'm not even going to go see that film" (The first time I heard that was from Greg Palmer—who turned out to be a sweet guy, actually—announced that he wasn't going to see "Star Wars" because "what's the point?" Always remember that.

I see a lot of that in haughty blog-posts and my reaction always is "you set yourself up as a writer about films and you don't do your job?"

It irritates me. At least, don't announce it and prove you're incompetent and destroy your credibility.

Rant done."Yojimbo_5"https://www.blogger.com/profile/12791996320278381516noreply@blogger.com
